Superfoods and Super Grains: What They Are

Have you ever heard of superfoods? Did you know that oats, quinoa, and teff are part of this group?

First, let’s understand what “superfood” means.

A superfood is a commercial term used to describe foods that are believed to offer health benefits when included in a balanced diet. It is important, however, to consult a nutritionist or doctor to find the best approach for your personal diet.

Superfoods are generally divided into two main groups:

  • Superfruits, also called “super fruits,” such as pomegranate, goji berries, etc.
  • Supergrains, also called “super grains,” such as oats, quinoa, teff, etc.

Specifically, super grains are cereals that stand out for certain characteristics not found in other varieties. Oats, quinoa, and teff belong to this group.

Let’s take a closer look.

2. Quinoa as a Superfood

Although quinoa is not a true cereal and is therefore classified as a pseudocereal, it is included among the super grains due to its high protein content. Quinoa contains more protein, calcium, phosphorus, and iron, making it an excellent gluten-free alternative for people with gluten intolerance.

3. Teff as a Superfood

Teff is a cereal originating from Eritrea and Ethiopia, now popular as a superfood. It is considered a super grain due to its nutrient content, particularly its high levels of minerals such as calcium, iron, and magnesium.
